Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS (HOPWA)

Summary
HOPWA provides housing assistance and supportive services for low-income people with HIV/AIDS and their families.

Purpose
People with AIDS (PWAs) and other HIV-related illnesses often face desperate situations as their ability to work (and therefore their income) declines and their health care expenses mount. Homelessness and lack of adequate medical care threaten both family stability and the health of the affected person. HOPWA helps low-income PWAs and their families by providing funds for secure housing than can serve as a base for health care and other services. To receive funds, the program requires States and localities to set long-term strategies to meet the housing needs of low income PWAs and their families, which encourages communities to better coordinate local and private efforts to serve PWAs.

Eligible Clients
HOPWA primarily benefits low-income Persons living With AIDS (PWAs) and their families, especially those who are homeless or at great risk of becoming homeless. Each household receiving rental help or living in housing funded under the program pays rent based on their income (under the same formula as tenants of public housing or Section 8 assisted housing, 30 percent of their adjusted income).

Dining with Friends 2008 raised over $90,000. Thank you to our DWF hosts and their guests as well as The Red Party Committee for all the work and effort to ensure another successful fundraising season.
Support for our community significantly impacts people living with HIV/AIDS in our four-county service area.
